Memories of Willie/Beresford Wilberforce Hopkins McLean
by Marion "Joy" McLean
"Willie" (pet name) was chosen by his father as best genetic reflection of himself. Willie was declared the logical bard of all the siblings. Our father therefore consulted Willie on all profound matters. as the middle child, he certainly made himself visible, not so much by deliberate physical action, but by his ability to be the silent watcher. In moments of sibling turmoil, he would declare to our parents, "I am not responsible mother. I was only here sucking my tongue." He was definitely off the hook of wrongdoing.
As a child, he recognized as not only the logically smart, but the provocateur, and the one to break the ice with a laugh or a witty saying. School was easy for him. He was always top of his class and the tutor to those students who struggled. He had high standards and held everyone accountable. If he could not have his way when he was ignored or thought to be wronged, he would wreak vengeance. Example. Time came for him to go to high school. He could not elicit from out father a clear plan so Willie took to action. He went to a part of the banana farm that was truly thriving and he proceeded to chop down as many budding plants as he could. Then when his energy calmed he ran away to his Uncle Ronald who lived in Albian Mountain.
There he stayed, until his uncle helped him to craft a plan to redeem himself while ensuring that wish to start high school was actualized. He did accomplish his goal. That September he enrolled in Wallgrove High School. There he excelled in his studies. He graduated with his Senior Cambridge Certificate, again top of his class. He stayed and became a teacher there, before leaving Jamaica to pursue higher studies in the USA.
My Mother always remembered his birthday, because he was born July 7t, the same day and year as Prince Charles, the son of Queen Elizabeth the II fo England.
