Ross Irwin Slater passed peacefully on June 15, 2019, surrounded by those he loved. We will always remember and miss his affable, generous spirit.
Ross lived a full and active life of 90 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Lee Slater, his sons Michael (Andrea Potos), Thomas, and Timothy (Megan Orphanos), and daughter Nancy (Calvin Gabriel), his two grandchildren, Trevor and Lexi, and a new granddaughter on the way. He was born and raised in Minnesota. He received his bachelor’s degree at Stout State University in Wisconsin, where he met his life-long sweetheart, Mary Lee. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War.
Ross worked for over 40 years as an excellent engineering manager, starting out in the early years of electronics and the computer industry. He worked on many innovative projects for NASA, government, and defense at such companies as Univac, Control Data, Scientific Data Systems, Xerox, and Mideo Systems. One key computer system from the early days of missile defense is on display at the California Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.
Ross loved his family, loved to treat everyone at wonderful restaurants and talk late into the night, loved pro-ball and sports, and loved to take long, early morning walks. In 2000 Ross and Mary Lee settled in beautiful Monterey, where they were very active at St. Timothy Lutheran Church together with many good friends. He served as president of the St. Timothy Foundation for many years. He loved to stage an ice cream social there every 4th of July. In later years, Ross always enjoyed visits from relatives and friends, especially family gatherings with his children and grandchildren, in the big house on the hill overlooking Monterey Bay. We will never forget him.
