Manuel Subia Sr Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Obituary Manuel or affectionately known as May by his close friends and relatives grew up in Alpine, Texas with 2 brothers, Chuco, & Mone, and 3 sisters, Celia, Estela, & Lala. His parents, Francisco Sr. and Valentina Subia, were also natives of West Texas. Manuel and Mary Lou had 8 children, Manuel Jr., Armando, Arturo, Melba Ann, Jimmy Lee, Armida, Adrian, and Adam. The family also remembers lovingly the loss of Armida in 2007. May’s 8 children added 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren to the brood. On a warm fall day in September of 1964, May and his adoring wife loaded up the children in a covered wagon, a 1959 Pontiac Catalina station wagon, with a small U-Haul, and headed west under a sepia colored Texas sky until they reached their new homestead in San Jose, CA. The family planted firm roots in the Valley of Your Heart’s Delight, and made this their new home for the following five decades. May was an avid player of baseball in his youth, and instilled in his children the discipline needed for his children to be successful in sports and outdoor activities. When May wasn’t watching sports on TV, he was outdoors watching his family enjoy the sunny and warm skies of central California. May loved Tex-Mex music as much as he loved the cooing of Country Western singers. If I could count the number of times I heard Folsom Prison Blues as a child growing up, it would never match the number of stars in the Galaxy. May soothed his aches and pains away with a can or two of Coors, and Johnny Cash in the juke box lamenting about lost money and gals. May was a strict disciplinarian. He valued hard work, and family. Although his family was cash poor in the beginning, the wealth of commitment he showered upon his 8 children remains in the heart of soul of us, his children. Time took its toll on May, but he never forgot his humble beginnings. And he never wanted his family to forget that to be alive was to be Texan. This one proud Texan we can never forget.
