Maria Teresa Hoàng Ngọc Loan was born on June 17, 1942 in Vietnam. She was the eldest of seven. As such, she took on a big role of responsibility at a young age to take care of her six siblings (Thuý, Oanh, Hiếu, Yến, Hùng, Nhạn). She always prioritized others before herself. She was selfless.
Eventually, she started a family of her own with her life-long partner of 57 years, Giuse Nguyễn Đình Hùng. Together, they bore four children. The six of them immigrated to the United States in 1984 and settled in Monterey, California. With scraps of the English language in her arsenal, she supported her family by managing her own video store, VN Video. She won her many customers’ love and loyalty for 15 years with charisma.
During her lifetime, Loan endured many challenges, from her mother’s passing at three-years-old to her recent heart surgery in 2019. She nevertheless embraced an ardent courage that is familiar to us all.
Despite life’s obstacles, she has had the pleasure of witnessing her children and grandchildren achieve the very opportunities that her and Hùng had sacrificed everything for: getting an education, finding soul mates, starting successful businesses, and exploring the world. Family, friends, and religion brought wholeness into her life. She was content.
Loan loved to garden. Her plants were her prized possessions, and she had the most beautiful backyard, teeming with butterflies. They complemented her lavender bushes and succulent pots.
She was a devout Catholic who never missed a day of mass. She worshipped the Lord and lived in his image.
She was always concerned about the wellbeing of others. She always sent her children home with sliced fruit and never hungry.
She enjoyed the flea market and prided herself in getting the best bargains.
She loved the color yellow, the birds that visited her each morning, and the Sound of Music.
She made the best flan. She made the best everything.
Maria Teresa Hoàng Ngọc Loan lived a truly fulfilling life, never short of kisses and hugs. She will be deeply missed by many. She is and always will be loved by her husband Hùng and their four children, Cường, Trung, Diễm, and Tài, along with her grandchildren, siblings, relatives, and friends.
